Quick summary

Keeping your baby cool at night can be difficult when the weather warms up, but a tower fan can help get your baby’s room to a safe and comfortable temperature for sleeping. We asked Jenna Wilson, a Sleep Consultant at Little Dreams ConsultingOpens a new window to help us with her expert advice on using a tower fan in your baby’s room. We also scoured the BabyCentre community for top recommendations from parents on the tower fans they’re using and their top tips on using a fan safely.

Everything we recommend
  • Beldray EH3713 portable tower fan
  • Dyson Cool™ tower AM07 cooling fan
  • Challenge white tower fan
  • Pelonis air cooler
  • ProBreeze 40" oscillating tower fan
  • Honeywell QuietSet tower fan
  • Meaco MeacoFan 1056 air circulator

What temperature should your baby's room be?

"A baby’s room should be between 16-20 degrees - we are always guided by the Lullaby Trust for safe sleeping advice and this is their recommendation. It may seem a little chilly but remember to take your baby’s temperature from their chest or back, not hands or feet." said Jenna.

It can be difficult to accurately judge the temperature of a room so The Lullaby Trust also recommend that it’s best to use a room thermometer in the room where your baby sleeps.

Is it safe to use a fan in your baby's room?

Jenna advised "it's fine to use a fan in your baby’s room but you need to be aware of safety. Always ensure the fan is not pointed directly at your baby and that neither the fan or any cables are within reach. This becomes even more relevant as your baby becomes older and more active."

You should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for setup and use of your tower fan.

How can you keep your baby cool at night in warm weather?

As well as running a fan, there are others ways of keeping your baby cool in warm weather. We asked Jenna for her top tips.

Jenna advised "It can be tricky to keep little ones cool in warm weather! Use lighter bedding and clothing (or just a nappy, depending upon the temperature)."

"You can open a window if it is safe to do so but do this first thing before the temperature really warms up – once it starts to get hot close the curtains or use a blackout blind to keep the sun out of your little one’s room." Blackout blinds were recommended by parents when we asked for their summer essentials, see which ones they recommended and the full listhere.

There are also helpful tricks that Jenna recommended you can do with your fan to help cool the room further. "You can also consider (safely and ensuring the water is not close to electrical points) a bowl of ice or frozen bottle of water in front of the fan to cool the air in the bedroom and cold, wet muslins on the side of the cot (whilst baby is not in it), again to cool the room."

You can also start cooling your little one down as part of their bedtime routine. Jenna recommended that "a slightly cooler bath before bed can be nice too." She also suggested that "older children may appreciate a cool damp flannel on their forehead."
