Pumpkin seeds are non-toxic and even packed with nutrients that are food for dogs. But, dogs shouldn’t just eat raw seeds. Unfortunately, the seeds could get stuck in your dog’s digestive tract or contribute to mild constipation.

- Typical recipes for roasted pumpkin seeds include oil and salt.
- You can use the powder as an ingredient in dog treats or sprinkle it on your dog’s food.
Ingredients
There is only 1 simple ingredient for preparing pumpkin seeds for dogs. You get that ingredient in one of two ways at grocery stores and markets:
- Whole Fresh Pumpkin – Small pie pumpkins are best
- Raw Pumpkin Seeds

If you want to make organic pumpkin seed powder, you’ll need to use organic pumpkin or organic fresh pumpkin seeds.
Equipment Needed
You probably have all the kitchen items, but just in case:
- Baking sheet for the oven method.
- Large sharp knife for cutting the pumpkin.
- Cutting board for cutting the pumpkin.
- Air Fryer for the air fryer method.
- Food Processor for grinding the seeds.
How to Cook Pumpkin Seeds for Dogs
These are the simple steps for cooking and grinding pumpkin seeds for dogs.
- Cut a pumpkin in half from top to bottom.
- Scoop out the seeds and place them in a colander.
- Rinse them with cold water to wash off the pumpkin guts.
- Spread the clean seeds on a paper towel to dry them.
Tip: Use the pumpkin flesh to make pumpkin puree for dogs.
Oven Method
- Place the seeds in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
- Bake at 320°F for 20 minutes or until they’re golden brown.
Air Fryer Method
- Place the pumpkin seeds in a single layer on the air fryer tray or in the basket.
- Air fry at 320°F for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
How to Grind Pumpkin Seeds for Dogs
- Allow the roasted pumpkin seeds to cool to room temperature.
- Place the seeds in a food processor, high-powered blender, spice grinder, or coffee grinder.
- Process until the seeds reach a powder consistency. It does not have to be a fine grind, just without any chunks of seeds.
How Much Ground Pumpkin Seeds for Dogs
As a general rule, give ½ to 1 teaspoon of pumpkin seeds powder for every 20 pounds of body weight. The amount will vary depending on their size. Less for small dogs and more for large dogs.
Large quantities can cause upset stomach, loose stools, or diarrhea. It’s important to start with a small amount and keep a close eye on your dog to watch for any adverse reactions. It’s the same as with giving your dog any new food or treats.
How to Feed Pumpkin Seeds to Dogs

Ingredients
- 1 cup Pumpkin Seeds from 1 Sugar baby or Pie Pumpkin
Instructions
Cut the pumpkin down the center, stem to bottom. Remove seeds.
Rinse the seeds in a colander and remove strings.
Spread the seeds out in a single layer on paper towels. Lay paper towels on top to dry them completely.
Oven
Preheat oven to 320°F.
Place the seeds in a single layer on a baking sheet covered in parchment paper or silicone sheet.
Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
Air Fryer
Place the seeds in a single layer on air fryer tray or in basket.
Air fry at 320°F for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
Allow the seeds to cool completely to room temperature.
Place the seeds in a food processor, high-powered blender, or coffee grinder.
Grind until a powder forms.
Place the powder in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. It will last up to 3 months.
